How to Use ChatGPT to Convert Recipes a Measurements or Ingredients

Learn these easy-to-use prompts for ChatGPT to help translate a recipe’s measurements or ingredients.

Using ChatGPT and Other AI Tools for Cooking

As an avid home cook, I’m often reading recipes and watching YouTube videos to learn new recipes and cooking techniques.

Many of my favourite online cooks are based overseas, and unfortunately, they have different units of measurement and access to different ingredients than what I’m familiar with. For example, a question I help a lot of readers answer is the top alternatives to Yukon Golds in Australia.

Thankfully, many of the annoying tasks that come with converting measurements can be cleared up using AI tools like ChatGPT. I’ve put together a list of my favourite prompts that I use to help convert recipes to Australian-friendly formats.

Similarly, for readers not based in Australia, these AI prompts can be used to convert recipes to any format you need. Just tweak the relevant parts of it and you’ll be good to go.

5 AI Prompts to Convert Recipe Measurements and Ingredients

1. ChatGPT Cooking Measurement Conversions Prompt

If the recipe you’re hoping to whip up uses measurements like ounces (oz) where you’d rather use ml, you can use ChatGPT or similar AI tools to help convert it for you.

Convert the following recipe (Insert URL of the recipe here or copy-paste recipe content) to fit measurements to me. Please:

  • Update Oz to ml
  • Update cups (240mL) to cups (250mL).
  • Update pints and quarts to mL or litres
  • Update ‘sticks of butter’ to 113grams of butter
  1. Update pounds and ounces (for weight) to grams and kilograms

2. ChatGPT Ingredient Conversions Prompt

Similarly, recipes online often call for ingredients that aren’t available in Australian shops. Or, they are available but they have different names here. For example, cornflour instead of cornstarch, or capsicum instead of bell pepper.

Here’s an AI prompt you can use to upgrade ingredients to the names they’re called locally for you:

“Convert the following recipe (Insert URL of the recipe here or copy-paste recipe content) to fit ingredients to me. Use Australian ingredient names where needed (e.g., cornflour instead of cornstarch).

If any ingredients from this recipe aren’t available in Australia, please list them at the end of your response.”

3. AI Prompt to Change Cooking Temperatures in Recipes

If you’ve been cooking long enough, you might have learned the simple way to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius. But, I assure you, using this AI prompt is much easier than doing the math on the fly.

“Convert the temperatures used in the following recipe (Insert URL of the recipe here or copy-paste recipe content) from Fahrenheit (°F) to Celsius (°C) for oven temperatures (e.g., 350°F = 180°C).”

4. AI Prompt to Convert Common Cooking Terms in a Recipe

“Convert the following recipe (Insert URL of the recipe here or copy-paste recipe content) to fit Australian-friendly cooking terms. For example, please:

  • Change ‘broil’ to ‘grill’.
  • Update ‘skillet’ to ‘frying pan’.

Adjust any other US-specific cooking terms or methods to their Australian equivalents.”

5. ChatGPT Recipe Ingredient Conversions Prompt
